Basic Drone Operations Training

Our Basic Drone Operations training program is designed for the beginner pilot. 

​

This course prepares you to apply for a Pilot Certificate – Small Remotely Piloted Aircraft (VLOS) – Basic Operations and covers the subjects set out in section 921.01 of Standard 921 — Small Remotely Piloted Aircraft in Visual Line-of-Sight (VLOS), based on Knowledge Requirements for Pilots of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems.

A PILOT CERTIFICATE – BASIC OPERATIONS* IS REQUIRED IF:

 

  • You are 14 years old or older;

  • Your drone weighs 250 g up to and including 25 kg;

  • You will fly in uncontrolled airspace – i.e. no air traffic control is provided;

  • You will stay under 120 metres (400 feet) above ground level;

  • You will maintain a minimum of 30 metres (100 feet) horizontal distance from bystanders and will not fly over them; and

  • You will always keep your drone in sight.

Basic Training Options

RPAS Ground School (Basic Operations)

Code: RPASOTC-GSB-2401

This course prepares you to write the Small Basic Exam for acquiring a Pilot Certificate – Small Remotely Piloted Aircraft (VLOS) – Basic Operations, and covers material on topics/subjects dedicated to TP 15263.

​

This course consists of three modules:

  1. Self-Study: 3 hours - Covers material dedicated to Canadian Aviation Regulations, Radiotelephony and pilot resources relevant to RPAS/UAV operations plus topics dedicated to TP 15263.

  2. Instructor Led (Online): 7 hours – Covers topics/subjects dedicated to TP 15263.

  3. Knowledge Check (Online): 1 hour (Practice Exam)

Prerequisites:

None - given the comprehensive nature of the Small Basic Exam, Transport Canada recommends taking this course.

RPAS Flight School (Basic Operations)

This course builds and tests your skills and knowledge to maintain and operate your drone.

​

This course consists of three modules:

  1. Self-Study: 2 hours – Covers material to help you prepare for field training.

  2. Instructor Led (Hands-on): 2 hours – Provides hands-on training and tips to maintain and operate your drone.

  3. Proficiency Check (Hands-on): 30 min. – Tests your skills and knowledge to maintain and operate your drone.

Prerequisites:

  • Pilot Certificate – Small Remotely Piloted Aircraft (VLOS) – Basic Operations

  • Certificate of Registration for the drone being used for flight training. If you do not own a drone, RPASOTC can provide one at additional cost, please check for details​

To avail of the special rebate, eligible young pilot-candidates must agree to and fulfill all the conditions listed below:

  1. Young pilot-candidates must be at least 14 years of age, and under 16 years of age, on the date the RPAS Ground School (Basic Operations) they have registered for is scheduled to commence;

  2. Eligible young pilot-candidates must pay the full amount (plus tax) at the time of registration;

  3. Registered and eligible young pilot-candidates must successfully pass the Transport Canada-administered online Small Basic Exam within ten (10) calendar days of completing the RPAS Ground School (Basic Operations) course;

  4. Upon request from RPASOTC, registered and eligible young pilot-candidates must provide a valid government-issued photo ID to verify their identity;

  5. Registered and eligible young pilot-candidates must provide RPASOTC with a copy of their Transport Canada-issued Pilot Certificate – Small Remotely Piloted Aircraft (VLOS) – Basic Operations issued in their name;

  6. After RPASOTC ascertains that all of the above-listed criteria have been met, a 50% rebate will be refunded to the registered and eligible young pilot-candidate within ten (10) business days.
